Software Recruitment How much Transparent is the process

When i passed out of the college from a premier institute i didnot have any idea how the world will welcome me. But the tag name of my institute didnt let me down. I was placed in a good company with a handsome salary and was happy. I thought it was my talent which got me into such a big company. I was under the illusion that in this IT boom every software engineer in India is placed in some or the other company.

A year later one day i came to know that some openings at my company and then i went forward to send a mail to my college alumni group, informing about the the oppurtunities at my company. The first day i got the mails from the students who were from my college and fullfilling the requirements. But later i got hundreds of mails from people seeking for jobs from some other colleges.

Lets look at this situation from two angles. First suppose that i am candidate who is seeking for a job. I come to know about the openings at some company. I dont think of anything else but forward my resume with a nicely written cover letter. I think that as soon as the mail is sent some one at the recieving end is going to filter them. And i wait for a day or two and see if i get a call for the interview alas i didnt get. What should i do? Should i go and kill myself for not getting a call. Or shall i assume that my resume is not excellent enough for the call. All this questions bugs me for a day or two.

Now lets assume that i posted a job in some website. I get mails from some people. I have an attitude that i will stop forwarding the mails to my HR after i get some 20 mails which fit the job requirements. So starting day 1 with full enthu i open one by one resume scan them and send the best resume to the HR. Now i am done with my work and i close the issue. I wait for the HR to reply back to them. But here matter doesnt end. As i see my mailbox flooding with thousands of mails. How many do i see? I simply do a delete. I dont have to take care about the feelings about the sender. I am just an ordinary man, looking for some kind of benefit from referals. And moreover i cant take all of the mails sort them by their knowledge and give them rankings and then send them. This will take O(n*n) time which no one has these days. I am in a dilemma. Am i making those hundreds wait for their job call, making them feel bad about their qualifications.

Selection, Choice

Selection is one of the important things which all of us as human beings make on a day to day basis. Making right choice is not only difficult but time consuming too. Many people make the decision in the nick of time and some who take a decade to do the same thing. No one can argue whether the decision taken was right or wrong.

How much time and energy can be wasted in taking a decision? What is the optimal time to stop evaluating your choices? What weights that need to be assigned to the parameters which influence the options? Where to find the right information? Which information to rely upon? Who can give the correct and timely information? These questions keep on bugging ones mind when ever a decision is pending. An example can answer all such questions. For example a person is about to buy a digital camera. First of all parameters needs to be fixed. What is the price range? What is the resolution which i need? Do i need to have a professional camera or a casual camera? Which brand to go with? Experts are available to set some of these variables. Some friends who have already used cameras or some online website which provides such comparisions. After setting these variables, all the possible cameras are jotted down. Thus a small subset of cameras are left. Now the decision remains with the individual to decide which parameter to give more weigthage, is it the looks which you prefer more or is it the ease of use, or the brand, or the customer reviews. More or less if these steps are followed then with gurantee one can argue that he will land in problem after making a wrong cull.

Some wrong choices can make one suffer for his life. But the simple example in the last paragraph doesn't come in that category. Once a camera is brought it can be replaced. But say its the case of culling upon a life partner. Till what time will you wait to get your dream girl? What qualities will you look for?
Another example is when selecting from a pool of jobs. Which company will fulfill my dream, which will pay more, which will offer a better career, which will give me more benefits then the rest. Many such mind boggling questions which in earth no one can answer with 100% confidence.

Another view of the same issue is this, is it that if more options are there then more confusion or if lesser options are there then one may think that he has lesser options and he may choose the best among the lot which may not be best in the market.

In this arcane world with myraid number of choices one may feel to be left out without any clues. Following the steps mentioned in these paragraphs one can ensure that the choice willn't hurt him in future. Decision making may be tough task but never let it overwhelm you in any case.
