We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and in

Learning means gaining knowledge or skill. We learn from childhood till we are interred. Learning happens in many forms from watching a aerialist performing on the road to lectures in the class. In any form learning gives us the power to survive in this ever changing world. Discussion is also a form of learning which involves many people and myriad number of views on the same subjects. We human beings tend to discuss many things but hardly learning anything out of it due to our nature of defending our stance.

Agreements don't cause mental tensions, here people agree upon what ever is being discussed. On the other hand, disagreement tends to create an atmosphere of anger, with each part backing its stance and not trying to understand the opinion of others.
Moreover if someone believes your own views then you start firmly believing your view. This is good when you want to reassure what ever you have learnt over the ages.

Though many think that agreements leads to learning but it not quite true. If everyone agrees on one point then there would be no development and no improvement in the thought process and thus no learning. When people agree upon something then it is more likely that they are not analyzing all facets of the discussion. One example which would support this argument could be designing a system. If all the stock holders agree without any questions on the design then it doesn't mean that designer has done a great job, but it means that others haven't thought enough about the problem. This leads to a poor system design.

All the discoveries and inventions, which make our life more comfortable, are there because of difference in opinion. When there is a disagreement we come to know a different aspect of the same thing. Knowing all the facets helps in understanding and improving our knowledge about the topic. Learning process will definitely flourish in such an environment.Disagreement in a discussion leads to learning only if the discussion happens with great composure and coolness. Heated discussions only lead to waste of time and energy. All the interlocutors involved in the discussion should come with an attitude to learn and not to altercate. One famous example I could site for this can be the Galileo's theory about the earth's revolution around the sun. Administration at that time didn't agree upon such a revolutionary theory. Galileo proved his theory due to this difference of opinion, which helped the civilzation in knowing the truth about the universe. Had Galileo agreed upon the contemporary theorists of that time we wouldn't have learnt about it till date.

In disagreement people come to know where they are mistaken. If a child was taught from childhood that sun rises from west. He or she would know that he was wrong only when some one opposes his view point.

I would like to sum up by saying that it is important for us to interact with different kinds of people. And that learning would happen when there is disagreement in the group, and it depends upon the individual attitude.
